Joseph F. DeRupo is Director, External Relations & Communications at the National Coffee Association. In that position, he directs NCA communications with members, the industry, government agencies and the media, including NCA publications, social media engagement, and press relations. He also manages NCA’s scientific affairs program as staff liaison to its Scientific Advisory Group, as well as supports NCA’s government affairs activities. He holds a J.D. degree from Columbia University School of Law and a B.A. from Columbia College.

  


 

Michael Edwards is managing partner of ART Marketing Insight. He is proud to have been part of the National Coffee Drinking Trends study for the past eight years and has witnessed firsthand the evolving coffee marketplace. Prior to co-founding ART, Michael spent 15 years using consumer research to help companies such as P&G, Nestle, Kraft and Mars make consumer-relevant decisions. Michael has enjoyed brief periods living in two coffee producing countries: Guatemala and Nicaragua. He drinks his coffee with milk, no sugar.

 


  Gary Jay Kushner has been a food industry lawyer for more than 30 years. He represents trade associations and corporations before government agencies, Congressional committees, and the courts in a variety of matters. Gary has particular experience with the development, interpretation, and enforcement of laws and regulations governing food production, processing, and distribution throughout the United States and internationally. He also serves as general counsel to a number of national associations.

As counsel to trade associations and companies involved in the public policy arena, Gary analyzes legislation introduced in Congress and state legislatures, as well as regulations proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and other federal and state government agencies. He routinely evaluates their impact on the food industry from farm to table, and prepares amendments, testimony, and comments on such initiatives. He anticipates how laws and regulations might be changed to facilitate the marketing of food products.

Before joining Hogan & Hartson, Gary served as Vice President and General Counsel for the American Meat Institute where he directed the organization's legal, regulatory, and legislative activities. Before first entering the private practice of law, he served as Staff Counsel for Scientific Affairs at the Grocery Manufacturers of America. Gary is a frequent lecturer and regularly contributes to numerous trade publications. He is co-author of A Guide to Federal Food Labeling Requirements, prepared for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 1990; HACCP Management Manual: A Guide to Food Regulatory Compliance, published by Food Chemical News, Washington, D.C., 1996; and Summary of Law on Warranties and Disclaimers in the Sale of Seed, published by the American Seed Trade Association, Washington, D.C., 1996

Norm Ouellette chairs the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the National Coffee Association of the USA. Norm is Vice President of Global Quality and Scientific Affairs at Starbucks Coffee Company where he oversees Product Safety, Quality and Regulatory Affairs activities worldwide. 

Norm is a veteran of the Coffee Industry having spent over 11 years with Starbucks Coffee Company and, prior to that, Kraft Foods (Maxwell House). During this period, he led Coffee Product & Process Development activities in the US as well as in Canada, the UK and Europe. Norm served as Director of Quality Assurance for Oscar Mayer and Vice President Worldwide QA for the Campbell Soup Company. Through his extensive experience in package foods, consumer focused product development, QA and Regulatory Affairs, Norm has formulated a broad perspective on coffee, product safety, consumers and regulations worldwide.

Norm holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and Masters of Business Administration from Iona College (NY). 

 


 

Jack Scoville is a futures market analyst specializing in grains, softs, rice, oilseeds, and tropical products such as coffee and sugar. He offers brokerage services to an international clientele of agricultural producers, processors, exporters, and other professional traders.

Jack Scoville writes daily commentaries - Morning Grains and Softs, in both English and Spanish. He is regularly quoted by most major wire services including Dow Jones, AP, and Reuters. His comments have also appeared in newspapers around the world and on various radio and television shows.

Jack offers a dedicated and high quality service for his clients. His industry contacts in South America, Europe, Asia, and North America provide him with a unique view of the markets. He also uses his own charting program for technical traders.

Jack began working in the futures industry over 20 years ago and spent 10 years working on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade in various roles. He has been a broker off the floor since then and has been with the Price Futures Group since it was established in 1988.

  


 
Robin Stafford is Of Counsel in the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster LLP, where she specializes in environmental law. Her practice has focused on litigation of claims under federal and state environmental law, including CERCLA, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and California's Proposition 65 ("Prop 65"). Ms. Stafford has also assisted clients with compliance issues arising from Prop 65 and storm water regulations under the federal Clean Water Act, and has helped manage risks associated with real estate transactions by offering advice on environmental and contractual indemnity issues.
