The National Coffee Association opposed Ethiopia’s attempt to trademark the geographical indicators Sidamo and Harrar (Harar) because such action would jeopardize the supply of these high quality beans and economically harm producers. Notwithstanding the fact that trademarking a geographical indicator is contrary to United States law, other methods are available for registering marks. However, even using more appropriate Intellectual Property registration vehicles would not in and of itself add value to Ethiopian coffees. In July, the NCA clearly communicated to the Ethiopian government that the Association wanted to work with them to develop effective and constructive solutions to the challenges they are facing, including enhancing market access and value through brand building. The NCA is committed to supporting sustainability and a socially responsible industry, and continues to stand by its offer to assist the Ethiopian government develop approaches that appropriately address their concerns. To avoid any further inaccuracy in this context, the NCA also reiterates that this matter was not brought to the attention of the NCA by any of its members. Contrary to statements made by Oxfam International and their purported sources, NCA president & CEO Robert F. Nelson never told Ethiopian government staffers at any meeting that an NCA member brought this issue to its attention.
